Is Technology as Helpful as it seems?
Technology has evolved rapidly since its beginning around 1950s, to current year 2015. There is a big difference compared to when the first computers were invented. Now the use of computers and the incorporation of new devices is part of our daily routine. Furthermore it is a great help for high-risk jobs, like the people who defuse bombs during a terrorist threat. Before, they used to carefully approach to the bomb, look for the correct cables and deactivate it before time ran out and cause serious damage; with the invention of robots, now they only send robots with cameras and from a safe place handle the bomb problem through the robot.
This advance helps us make our lives simpler by saving the amount of time spent, distance, and having more communication, as Wu says, "Those days are over, replaced by modern comforts” (Wu 1). As an example, the nomads of the northeastern United States, Oji-Cree were a group that had a high percentage of deaths during winter because of starvation. They used canoes and fished during winter for food, even they walked hundreds of miles. After they were exposed to technology, their lives change in every aspect, making it simpler and easier to survive, the population rate grew. They were given improved tool of the modern world, snowmobiles, boats with engines and even televisions for their entertainment. Doctors of modern days use robots to perform operations, the benefit? making every procedure precisely and efficiently. Architects use computers to design three dimensional buildings and plug in numbers into formulas, in this way they will not forget to put a number because with the minimum error they commit, the structure will fall down. Weather is predicted with the help of satellites installed on the space that send information to advise weather forecast persons of extreme weather conditions, hurricanes, extreme cold, tornadoes and more.
Advances in societies not always are hundred percent positive, the negative side of technology, like the side effect, is that even when it is made to help people, also affects us in different ways. An example, the nomads Oji-Cree, that despite technology helped them to spend less time in long distances, the population now suffers from high levels of obesity. In addition, before, they made more physical work, now with the new tools is very little the effort they have to do and now they suffer from health problems.
Even those who were exposed to technology from an early age have problems because of the excessive use of it. Carr says “I’m not thinking the way I used to think” we just want to find answers without reading more than two or three paragraphs (Carr 2). Can become dangerous too, specially during driving, how many people use their cell phones to send messages or talk while they are driving? Is the number one cause of car accidents in the United States, follow it by drinking and driving.
The evolution of electronic devices is developing more each year. The hint is use them correctly and with moderation. People use them for everything, there are cell phone applications that even can help you in case you get trapped during an earthquake. Using computers, cellphones, applications, and tablets for our convenience will not hurt anyone.
